Grosvenor Swords

The following slightly edited email was received from Allen Wandling, the owner of the sword, who so kindly sent us photographs of the sword to display on our web site:

Good morning Carl,

It’s so nice to hear from you, and yes you have my permission to list it on your web site.
This will be a big plus for your round table and web site.

This famous sword was presented to Major C. H.Grosvenor, 18th Infantry Ohio, by the Officers and Men of his Regiment as a Testimonial of there esteem and confidence

Major Grosvenor used this sword in the two major battles of Chickamauga, Ga., where he saved General Thomas when their line broke down when Confederate General Longstreet almost broke through, until Lt. Colonel Grosvenor at that time with the 18th Ohio infantry stopped them, and he was wounded also.   And I believe, he had the sword at Lookout Mountain.

Carl, I bought this from a big collector out of Kentucky when I found out this sword was for sale and from Athens Ohio, since I was raised in Albany until I went into the Military.  I still own land in Albany and outside of Albany even through I live in Illinois 20 miles from St. Louis now for the last 46 years.  I do travel to Athens when I go check on my property at least twice a year.  Like I said before, I used to go to the monument when my father had a body shop in Athens at one time many years ago.

I love history and I have a very large collection of Civil War relics in my home I have been on TV, radio and the newspapers as well as in the North South Trader Civil War magazine over the last 20 years.

I am so happy I was able to share this very famous sword with you and your round table.
If I can ever help you with anything please let me know.

Have a wonderful day,

Allen Wandling

[Editor’s note: Since this letter was written Mr. Wandling has also supplied us with  photographs of General Grosvenor’s ceremonial sword, which he has obtained for his collection as well.  These photos are now included in this section as well.]
